Merge mining
One algorithm.
Shared work.
Every chain here uses Scrypt for proof of work, and that shared algorithm is what makes merge mining possible. A miner hashing for Litecoin can submit the same work to another Scrypt chain that accepts it, earning on both without spending any extra energy.
For a smaller chain this is the difference between surviving and not. A network with a fraction of a percent of Litecoin’s hashrate would be trivial to attack alone. Accepting Litecoin’s work means borrowing the security of the largest Scrypt chain — and it costs Litecoin’s miners nothing to provide it.

Whether a given coin is being merge-mined at any moment depends on the pool: miners choose which auxiliary chains to merge, and that changes. What does not change is the algorithm underneath, which is why these communities have more in common than a ticker.

The proof is in the hashrate
Five of these chains carry within a few percent of the same work. They are not independently attracting near-identical hashrate — that is Litecoin’s hashrate, arriving through the merge.
A chain worth a few million dollars is defended by hashrate it could never buy on its own, and it costs Litecoin’s miners nothing to provide it.
